5HTP and Weight Loss
Research has shown that some people who take 5-HTP noticed an improvement in their mood, decrease in appetite, and felt they were able to sleep better. There is also considerable evidence that brain serotonin-increasing drugs, and therefore 5-HTP, are an effective way to treat obesity and in promoting weight loss.

What is 5HTP?

5-Hydroxytryptophan or 5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that converts in the brain into a chemical called serotonin, an important brain chemical involved in mood, behavior, appetite, and sleep. 5-HTP is obtained by extracting it from the seeds of a legume called Griffonia simplicifolia, which is found in West Africa. It is marketed as a dietary supplement and an antidepressant and it is recommended to take anywhere from 50mg to 900mg 5-HTP daily, depending on the needs of the individual.

Studies carried out by Italian scientists support the use of 5-HTP as an effective way of promoting weight loss by increasing serotonin in the brain and thus decreasing carbohydrate cravings.

Side Effects

Life threatening side effects have not been reported with taking 5-HTP for weight loss or any of the other objectives known to be activated by its use. However, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, decreased libido, and nightmares have been reported with high dosages (depending on the individual)

Caution

Not to be taken in conjunction with prescription anti depressants.
